The world is often an overwhelming and daunting place, and it can be easy to allow that to get the better of you. The past month or so has been pretty overwhelming in terms of the news, University commitments and work commitments and because of that, I’ve ended up neglecting my blog and other pass times. Which is a real bummer.
When you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, no matter what the reason is, it’s easy to let yourself feel bogged down and even a bit depressed. It can be hard to focus, be productive or make time for the things that make you happy.
There is so much I could say on the topic of depression and coping with tough days, but for now, I’ll start with trying to maintain a sense of perspective. For me, making a conscious effort to see the good in my life and the world is really important in handling difficult days.
I am incredibly fortunate to have so many sources of goodness in my life and on the toughest of days taking the time to focus on those rather than whatever is bothering me really helps. I’m not saying it’s easy, it definitely isn’t, and some days it’s impossible. But when you can it really helps give you a sense of perspective and allows you to appreciate the joys of life.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed trying to take note of the good in your life or even just the good in your day can go a long way. Making a habit of appreciating what you have will drastically improve your happiness and perspective on life.
If it helps, write a list and refer back to it as needed, or get a journal and make sure you write some things you’re grateful for in it regularly. It might be difficult at first or feel a bit forced but eventually, with practice, it’ll become a habit which will make you happier, healthier and ready to handle whatever comes your way.
